"When we want to tell others that someone is especially good, we sometimes say, 'he's an angel.' By this we mean that this person has shown a very fine spirit. But a spirit is something like the wind which we cannot see but can feel.
It was common, at the time that Jesus was born, for people to describe very special spiritual things that happened to them in terms of being 'visited by an angel.' And because an angel was thought of as being good, it was believed that he was a messenger sent from God.
While the shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks of sheep out in the fields near Bethlehem on the night that Jesus was born, they experienced something very beautiful and good. In telling of it to others, they said it was a visit from an angel."
